Andreas Skiing Journey to Mera Peak
With Nepal’s breathtaking Himalayas, Nepal is one of the most prominent adventure hubs and continues to attract adventurers from around the globe, this November we had the privilege to host our good friend Andreas from Norway for his extraordinary climbing and skiing expedition on Mera Peak (6476m.). This adventurous journey will be a good trek, a nice climb, and an even nicer skiing descent from the summit. Combined with the high-altitude adventure and the thrilling artistry of cross-country skiing, the adventure is set to take place in Makalu Barun National Park.
Beginning of the Journey
The adventure started with a 30-minute scenic flight from Kathmandu to one of the most extreme airstrips in the world, Tenzing Hillary Airport at Lukla (2800m). Popularly known for its challenging terrain it sets quite a tone that the Himalayas of Nepal have to offer. From Lukla, Andreas began his journey to Mera Peak, passing through traditional Sherpa settlements, dense rhododendron forests, and the vast alpine vegetation of Makalu Barun National Park. Traversing through the rugged trails and getting acclimatized to the altitude, the team made their way to Mera Peak Basecamp. As they ascended further the view became even more magical with the summit showcasing the towering peaks of the world Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Cho you, and the mighty Everest.
Ascending the Summit of Mera Peak.
With the successful summit of the Mera Peak (6476m), Andreas stood out on top of Nepal’s highest trekking peaks. With the guidance and expertise of our climbing Sherpa, Lhakpa Sherpa of Pangboche, the team was able to overcome the challenges they faced and celebrated their remarkable achievement. The picturesque panoramic mountain view that Mera Summit offers is unmatched, making climbing a dream too many adventure lovers.
Thrilling descending with Ski from the Summit
As we know this adventure wasn’t only about the summit, the real thrill was about to begin. Strapping on his skis, Andreas skied down a 4km descent from the south summit of Mera Peak (6200), gliding through the snow-covered slopes, he skied down approximately 13,000 feet to the old Mera Peak basecamp, which is no longer in use at the present time. This skiing descent combined technical skill and adrenaline-pumping excitement, fulfilling the primary goal of Andreas’ expedition.
The Journey Back to Khare and Beyond
Following the summit and ski descent, the team safely returned to Khare, a charming settlement nestled in the mountains. Here, they rested and celebrated their successful expedition before continuing their trek to Kothey, another scenic Sherpa village, for an overnight stay in a cozy mountain lodge. The final phase of the journey involved a flight back to Kathmandu, marking the end of an unforgettable two-week adventure.
Acknowledgments
This expedition wouldn’t have been possible without the exceptional guidance of Lhakpa Sherpa, whose expertise ensured the safety and success of the journey from start to finish. Fresh from this adventure, Lhakpa is already preparing for his next expedition on the iconic Ama Dablam (6476m). We extend our deepest gratitude and congratulations to Andreas Fausko and Team Norway for their indomitable spirit and for embracing the challenges of high-altitude climbing and skiing.
Looking Ahead
This extraordinary feat underscores the endless opportunities Nepal offers to adventurers. From climbing its towering peaks to skiing its pristine slopes, every journey is a testament to the resilience and passion of mountaineers worldwide.
Congratulations, Andreas, on your remarkable achievement. May this adventure be the first of many more as you explore the heights of your dreams.
