There are two ways to arrive in Tibet: one from mainland China and another from Kathmandu, Nepal. If you plan to enter Tibet via mainland China, you must obtain a Chinese visa from the Chinese Embassy in your country. Since the Tibet Travel Bureau (TTB) in Tibet does not accept visa applications from individuals, you must process your application through an authorized travel agent. Once you have the visa, send scanned copies of it and your passport to your travel agent. Your passport should be valid for at least six months for a single or double entry visa and at least nine months for a multiple entry visa. Your travel agent will then submit the documents to TTB for a Tibet entry permit. Once the permit is issued, you can collect it from your arrival or stay location in mainland China.
If you are entering Tibet from Kathmandu, you need to apply for both a Chinese visa and a Tibet entry permit in Kathmandu. Therefore, plan to arrive in Kathmandu a few days earlier (check with your travel agent for the exact number of days) before your trip to Tibet.
Note: The Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu issues visas only on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 09:00 hrs to 11:00 hrs. Your travel agent's representative will assist you in obtaining the visa. Visa regulations in Tibet are subject to change, so it's essential to stay updated on the latest information.
