SKI EXPEDITION

in Nepal

Skiing is popular in both the sport and tourism sectors worldwide, with the modern history of skiing dating back to around the 18th century. Throughout the Middle Ages, Scandinavian farmers, hunters, and warriors regularly used skis. The present form of skiing began to take shape in the 1990s with the development of prototypes of deep-side-cut-shaped skis by Elan and Kneissl. There are three major types of skiing: recreational skiing, freestyle skiing, and backcountry skiing. Skiing involves sliding down snow-covered hills on ski equipment with fixed-heel bindings, commonly referred to as downhill skiing due to the descent from the top of hills.

Ski tourism has become immensely popular, offering adventures such as ski-mountaineering and ski-trekking. Climbing mountain peaks on foot and descending by skiing provides thrills and excitement for enthusiasts. For professional skiers, there is no greater thrill than skiing off-piste in the Himalayas. The adventure of skiing at high altitudes is indescribable.

Nepal stands out as a prime destination for high altitude ski-mountaineering due to its geographical and physical characteristics. Research indicates that Nepal has the potential to lead the world in high altitude skiing. The country is home to numerous snow-capped mountains, with eight of the world's 14 highest peaks located in Nepal: Everest (8848.86m), Kanchenjunga (8586m), Lhotse (8516m), Makalu (8485m), Manaslu (8163m), Dhaulagiri (8167m), Annapurna (8091m), and Annapurna I (8091m).

Mt. Lhotse (8516m) witnessed the first successful Ski-Climbing record by Xtreme Climbers in the fall/autumn of 2018. Additionally, destinations like Mera Peak, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri, Thorong La Pass, Dhorpatan, and Langtang's Kyanjin Gompa offer excellent skiing opportunities in Nepal. It has been proven that numerous areas in Nepal experience snowfall during the winter season, providing ample opportunities for skiing. The period after December is particularly suitable for opening and organizing skiing packages in Nepal, especially in high altitude areas with sufficient snowfall and flat slopes conducive to skiing.

Xtreme Climbers has introduced a High Altitude Skiing program as an ideal opportunity for backcountry skiers in the Nepal Himalayas, ranging from 6000m to over 8000m. The program provides high altitude Climbing Sherpa guides and professional skiers who have successfully completed skiing activities in the Himalayas. Their experience, expertise, and advanced logistics techniques are essential for ski guides.

The main objectives of skiing in Nepal are to promote the country as a winter sports destination, attracting tourists during the winter season to boost revenue in the tourism sector. It also aims to encourage Nepali outdoor enthusiasts, such as trekkers and guides, to learn skiing and potentially pursue it as a hobby or profession. Skiing can also promote internal tourism during the winter months, allowing visitors to experience mountain culture while skiing in high valleys. Additionally, teaching local children how to ski helps create awareness of the possibilities available in winter sports.
