Nagarjun Hill, also known as Jamacho, is a forested gem within Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, located just 3 kilometers from the bustling heart of Kathmandu Valley. This scenic park, spanning 159 square kilometers, rises to an elevation of 2,128 meters (6,982 feet) and was officially designated as Nepal’s ninth national park in 2002. Prior to this, it was managed as the Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve under the Shivapuri Watershed Development Board. Today, the park serves as both a recreational sanctuary and a vital natural resource, offering some of the valley's most stunning vistas, rich biodiversity, and serene landscapes.

The park’s ecological diversity is impressive, positioned in a transition zone between subtropical and temperate climates. Its forests are a blend of pine, oak, rhododendron, and other species, creating a lush environment for wildlife. Nagarjun is home to Himalayan black bears, leopards, jungle cats, and rhesus monkeys, as well as an impressive array of 177 bird species, including nine threatened ones. Additionally, the park boasts 102 butterfly species, many of which are rare or endangered, and a fascinating variety of mushrooms. As a primary water source for Kathmandu, it supplies around 30 million liters of water daily from rivers such as the Bagmati and Bishnumati.

For adventure seekers, the Nagarjun Rock Climbing course is an exhilarating highlight. The area offers an excellent range of bolted routes, from beginner-friendly grades to advanced climbs (French grade 5a to 6c+), set against the tranquil backdrop of the park’s dense forest. Climbers can fully immerse themselves in this natural escape while receiving expert guidance to improve techniques and confidence on the rock walls. Whether you’re interested in hiking, bird watching, meditation, or challenging climbs, Nagarjun Hill is a prime destination that combines the thrill of outdoor adventure with the serenity of nature—all just a short drive from central Kathmandu.
