The Salpa Pass trek, nestled between the Sagarmatha and Makalu-Barun National Parks, offers adventurers a challenging yet rewarding journey through the Arun valley. Provided by Passages Nepal, this trek is renowned for its breathtaking views of Mount Everest, Mount Makalu, and numerous other snow-capped peaks to the north. Serving as an ancient trade route, locals historically used it to transport agricultural goods to Namche Bazaar in Tibet via the Nangpa La pass. Situated in the Makalu region above the Arun valley towards Lukla, Salpa Pass presents a unique ecological and geographical landscape.
The trail leads towards the sacred Salpa Pokhari, a pilgrimage site revered by people of diverse religions and cultures, particularly the Kirants, who consider it equivalent to the Ganges River in India. At an altitude of 3350 meters, the trek's highest point is Salpa Bhangyan (3800m), with Salpa Kharka serving as the highest campsite (3600m). The panoramic vistas include iconic peaks like Mera Peak (6476m), Everest (8848m), Makalu (8481m), Amadablam, Pumari, and others.
The Salpa Pass trek traces the footsteps of H.W. Tilman, who journeyed through the region on his approach to the Khumbu Valley in 1950. Culturally rich, the trek transitions from Sherpa to Rai villages, descending to Brahmin and Chhetri settlements. Despite the presence of basic lodges, trekkers can experience traditional hospitality throughout Eastern Nepal, often finding impromptu lodging options.
Beginning in Tumlingtar, the trek follows the Arun River before veering into the Irkhu Khola valley, renowned for its natural paper production. This journey stands as a gateway to the Makalu Barun National Park, teeming with tropical forest habitats and diverse fauna species, including 315 species of butterflies and 88 species of mammals. The Salpa Pass trek is a testament to the natural and cultural diversity that defines Nepal's eastern region.
