Mardi Himal, situated less than fifteen miles north of Pokhara, is the most southerly mountain of the Annapurna range and a newly opened route, representing a hidden treasure in the Annapurna region. Despite being the lowest and less frequented of the trekking peaks in Nepal, Mardi Himal offers breathtaking mountain views, sparkling rivers, and lush green terraced fields. The trek to Mardi Himal takes you through beautiful forests, captivating villages, and picturesque valleys, with cultural diversity being the main allure of this journey.
Standing at 5587m/18,330ft, Mardi Himal is located in the Annapurna region alongside the revered mountain of Fishtail or Mt. Machhapuchhare. The main climbing route ascends the East face over snow terrain, passing a col at 5200m.
The interest of western mountaineers in Mardi Himal was initially piqued by the photographs of Basil Goodfellow in 1953. However, it wasn't until 1961 that the mountain witnessed its first ascent. Jimmy Roberts, accompanied by two Sherpas, made the first ascent to the summit via a route on its west flank. Though rumors exist of another route being established on the South-West Face, Robert’s route remains the only recorded route for ascents.
The caravan route begins from Kathmandu (1400m/4,600ft) and proceeds to Lukla (827m/2713ft), then onward to Potana (1950m), Forest Camp (2500m/8202ft), Low Camp (2990m/9809ft), High Camp (3580m/11,745ft), and finally, base camp (4450m/14,599ft).
