The Mustang Damodar Kund Lake Trek is a renowned trekking destination in Upper Mustang, revered by both Buddhist and Hindu followers. Situated in the rain shadow of the northern Annapurna range of the High Himalayas, Damodar Kunda sits at an elevation of 4,890 meters, making it a cold and windy place. The best time to explore this forbidden kingdom is from April to September, with the annual festival taking place on the full moon of August. During this time, hundreds of Hindu and Buddhist devotees, mainly from India, gather here, with many opting for charter helicopters from Pokhara or Kathmandu. Fixed departure trips for Damodar Kunda Trek are organized every August.
The trek offers superb panoramic views of the entire Annapurna range, lush valleys, beautiful landscapes, and Tibetan monasteries. Views are particularly stunning from viewpoints slightly higher than the lakes, accessible by a short climb up some hills. To the north lies the Tibetan plateau and Damodar Himal (6,706m) with its 65 peaks, while to the south lies the Annapurna Himalayan massif.
Damodar Kunda holds significant historical and religious importance. According to the Barah Puran, Lord Krishna stated that those who visit this lake and take a deep bath will be freed from all sins. Legend has it that two sons of Kubera, the God of Wealth, were relieved of their sins after bathing in Damodar Kunda as suggested by Lord Krishna.
The Damodar Himal mountain range in the Mustang district includes peaks such as Muktinath Himal (6,706m) and Bhrikuti Peak (6,364m), among others. This Himalayan range, comprising 65 peaks, is the source of the Marsyangdi River.
