The ancient tradition of honey hunting in Nepal has been passed down through generations, particularly among the indigenous Gurung and Magar tribes of Bhujung and Pasgaon villages in mid-western Nepal. This unique practice, which involves skillfully collecting honey from wild bees in the Himalayan cliffs, has been a part of their culture for hundreds of years.
The remote villages of Bhujung and Pasgaon rely on local employment, and the honey-hunting trek provides them with an opportunity to earn a living through tourism. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture by staying as house guests in these villages, where they can spend time listening to stories, participating in honey hunting, and celebrating feasts with the locals.
The journey begins from Besi Sahar and gradually advances towards Bhujung and Pasgaon. Tea houses are available at the beginning and end of the trek, while camping may be required for a night. Along the way, travelers can observe the discreet culture and lifestyle of the indigenous tribesmen.
Modern communication technology has brought the tradition of honey hunting to light, turning it into a flourishing tourist activity in Nepal. However, as urbanization and globalization continue to impact traditional ways of life, this ancient tradition is gradually becoming rarer. Therefore, experiencing the Himalayan honey hunting tradition firsthand provides a unique opportunity to witness the deep connection between humans and nature and to savor the sweet, pure honey of the wild Himalayan giant bees.
